Official Lighting Ceremony of the Imperial Palace Outer Gardens (December 21, 2018)

The outer gardens of the Imperial Palace, normally dark at night, were lit up in a new government initiative. The lighting in the palace outer gardens had been renewed since 2016. Many gathered to celebrate the occasion and the winter illumination in Tokyo's Marunouchi area.

4th Meeting on a Long-Term Strategy under the Paris Agreement as Growth Strategy (December 21, 2018)

Minister Harada attended this meeting held at the Prime Minister's Office. Discussions took place among committee members and cabinet members on the need to further enhance necessary elements of the strategy based on discussions to date. Following the COP24, Minister Harada also called on clarifying the importance in realizing a decarbonization society within the strategy.

Official Visit by Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Economic Development (December 20, 2018)

Minister Harada welcomed 3 Ministers of the Maldives; Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer and Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail. They exchanged views on a wide range of economic issues of mutual interest, such as renewable energy cooperation through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM).

Inspection Visit to Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima islands in Kagoshima Prefecture (December 18-20, 2018)

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Katsumata visited two islands in the Amami Archipelago following the government's decision to recommend them, along with the northern part of the main island of Okinawa and the prefecture's Iriomote Island, as a candidate for listing as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2020.

24th Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) in Katowice, Poland (December 15, 2018)

Minister Harada expressed his expectation for Japan's upgraded GHG Observation Satellite to bring much improved accuracy of observations, to promote climate change measures and to advance scientific knowledge on global warming. At the end of the COP24, ministers and delegates celebrated the successful adoption of the implementation guidelines for the Paris Agreement, "Katowice Climate Package".

Official Visit by H.E. Batbayar Tserendorj, Vice Minister of Environment and Tourism, Mongolia (December 13, 2018)

ERIA and UNDP Launch Project 2045 Final Report and Host High Level Seminar and Reception in Jakarta, Indonesia (December 8-9, 2018)

ERIA and UNDP hosted a reception and High Level Seminar to launch the report of "Project 2045", to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Japan-Indonesia diplomatic relations. First Climate Change Adaptation Conference (December 3, 2018)

Minister Harada and State Minister Kiuchi hosted the Climate Change Adaptation Conference following the Climate Change Adaptation Act and the Climate Change Adaptation Plan, both entered into force and approved recently. Minister Harada Meet with the Furoshiki Study Group (December 3, 2018)

Minister Harada invited people from the Furoshiki Study Group to discuss a practical use of Japanese traditional wrapping cloth "Furoshiki", which can wrap items with many different shapes and carry them. Being made of cloth, furoshiki is easily storable, light, washable, reusable, and environmentally friendly. Furoshiki is convenient for day-to-day needs and even in emergency situations.
