State Minister Sato's Visit to Disaster-Hit Areas of Typhoon No. 19 (Hagibis) in Tochigi (December 19, 2019)

State Minister Sato visited Tochigi Prefecture, one of the areas of Japan damaged by Typhoon No. 19 in October, in order to inspect the incineration facility and provisional disposal sites in Sano and Tochigi. She discussed with the Governor, Mayor, and Council Members of the local government, on rapid disaster recovery process and long-term reconstruction plan.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Yagi's Official Visit to Minamata and Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture (December 12-13, 2019)

Following to Minister Koizumi's visit in October, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Yagi visited the Minamata Disease Municipal Museum in Minamata City and the Unzen Amakusa National Park, one of the first national parks in Japan. The park site spreads across Kyushu's Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures. It is comprised of 8 mountains all of which have good hiking trails.

Official Visit by Senior Executives of Rio Tinto, A Leading Global Mining Group (December 11, 2019)

State Minister Ishihara welcomed a senior leadership team of Rio Tinto, led by Ms. Simone Niven, Corporate Relations Group Executive. They exchanged views on resource circulation through a value chain and the role of non-state actors to lead towards decarbonization. They also discussed how to emit much less carbon dioxide and reduce the environmental impact.

Official Visit by the 28th Blue Planet Prize Awards Recipients, Prof. Eric Lambin of Belgium and Prof. Jared Diamond of USA (December 10, 2019)

In 1992, the year of the Earth Summit, the Blue Planet Prize was established to recognize outstanding individuals whose scientific research or applications of science contribute to solving global environmental problems. Prof. Lambin teaches at Universite Catholique de Louvain and Stanford. Dr. Diamond is a renowned environmental historian, Pulitzer-Prize winning author, and professor at UCLA.

13th Japan-China Energy Conservation and Environment Forum in Tokyo (December 8, 2019)

Minister Koizumi participated in a public-private joint forum between Japan and China in the fields of energy and the environment. Minister delivered a speech, outlining the importance of collaboration among state, sub-state (regions and cities), and non-state actors (incl. multinational corporations, NGOs) in global climate action including climate change adaptation and marine litter management.

MOE Japan Building Becomes First Government Building to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bag Distribution (December 6, 2019)

The Central Government Office Bldg. No. 5 in Tokyo, which houses MOE and MHLW, has stopped distributing plastic bags at all shops inside. Together with Health Minister Kato, Mr. Ryuichi Isaka, President of Seven & i Holdings, and Mr. Fumihiko Nagamatsu, President of 7-Eleven Japan, Minister Koizumi visited a 7-Eleven convenience store with their own "my bag" to promote this initiative.

Ceremony to Mark Completion of "CLT PARK HARUMI" in Tokyo (CLT: Cross-Laminated-Timber) (December 5, 2019)

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Yagi attended an inauguration ceremony of "CLT PARK HARUMI", designed by the local architect, Kengo Kuma, just outside the Olympic Village for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will be then moved to Maniwa in Okayama, where the actual CLT used, comes from. CLT is environment-friendly, and provides higher level of thermal performance and great energy efficiency.

Official Visit by Minister Mohammad Tajul Islam, Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives (LGRDC), Bangladesh (December 3, 2019)

State Minister Ishihara and Bangladesh's LGRDC Minister Md. Tajul Islam engaged in a constructive discussion on how to drive future cooperation to improve solid waste management in Bangladesh through a stronger partnership. Prior to the current position, Minister Tajul Islam held several diplomatic posts and also led JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Bangladesh.
