To all visitors
Shinjuku Gyoen is a historic garden on the former imperial garden grounds. In order to protect the precious flora and fauna and facilities in the garden and to ensure that visitors to the garden enjoy a pleasant, safe and comfortable stay, the following acts that may disturb other visitors are prohibited. We ask for your understanding and cooperation.
1. Bringing in the following items
- Alcoholic beverages
- Animals (except for those supporting people with disabilities)
- Plants
- Bicycles, strider bikes, tricycles, unicycles, dollies and carts requiring an area of 5,000 cm2 or more when in use
- Drones
- Insect nets, insect cages
- Household garbage
- Dangerous goods such as guns and swords
2. Play and exercise using the following play equipment and exercise equipment (examples below)
- Ball games such as catch and soccer
- Badminton
- Roller skates, roller blades, kickboards, skateboards
- Radio-controlled helicopters, radio-controlled cars
- Frisbees, boomerangs
- Rope-jumping, kite-flying
- Running or jogging in a group of 10 or more people (For details, please refer to "Running in the garden" as below.)
3. Acts of damaging animals, plants, gardens, facilities, etc.
- Picking or damaging plants
- Capturing or killing an animal (including fish and insects; the same shall apply hereafter)
- Climbing trees in the garden
- Feeding animals in the garden
- Entering a restricted or protected planting area
- Bringing in plants for planting or sowing seeds
- Bringing in animals
- Destroying or defacing facilities or structures
4. Improper acts disturbing garden management or causing trouble to other visitors
- Building a fire or using instruments that cause fire such as portable stoves
- Picking fallen leaves, branches, flowers or nuts and taking them out of the garden
- Playing musical instruments, or using audio equipment to make a loud noise, such as radio-cassette players, loudspeakers, or whistles
- Collecting donations
- Handing out flyers or leaflets
- Smoking (including electronic cigarettes, etc.) in the garden (including the Promenade and parking lots)
- Being half-naked, in swimsuits, or wearing revealing clothing, or cosplaying that causes fear or disgust
- Taking photos of or filming specific persons by bringing in devices during periods when an especially large number of visitors are expected, such as the cherry blossom viewing season and the Chrysanthemum Bed Exhibition period (For more details, please refer to “Image capture” on the website.)
- Swimming or playing in the pond or moat
5. Acts which may disturb garden scenery
- Disposing of or leaving garbage, filth, or waste anywhere other than in trash boxes
- Placing or displaying a banner, flag, signboard, or poster
- Setting up or using tents, parasols, etc. (except when setting up a tent as a heatstroke countermeasure for infants)
6. Commercial activities (except those authorized by the administrator)
- Displaying and selling goods, etc.
- Taking photos or filming for financial gain
- Holding workshops on photography, drawing, yoga, tai chi, walking, etc., games, entertainments, exhibitions, or any other similar events for financial gain
7. Other precautions
- The administrator may request that you cease any other act if he/she deems it inappropriate.
- In order to prevent accidents, in case of illegal and violent acts, the disturbance to other visitors, or failure to cooperate with our garden’s instructions, you may be asked to exit Shinjuku Gyoen.
Running in the Garden
Running is only allowed on the designated loop in red (see the map below). Groups of 10 or more are not allowed to run together. Please note that running is NOT allowed in the garden during the Spring Special Opening Period from March 25 to April 24 and the cherry blossoms season, which partially overlaps with the above-mentioned period.
