Purpose

The Environment Research and Technology Development Fund (ERTDF) is a policy contribution-oriented competitive research fund.

This was established for the purpose of promoting survey research and technical development in a comprehensive manner from an interdisciplinary and international viewpoint by bringing together the total capabilities of researchers in various fields, and thereby contributing to preservation of the environment in order to create a sustainable society, based on a recognition of the serious and severe impact of environmental problems on the foundations of human existence.

The aim of the ERTDF is support research which contributes to and is reflected in policies that will lead to solutions to various environmental problems in order to create a sustainable society, such as preventing of global warming and realizing a society in coexistence with nature, through the accumulation of scientific knowledge by survey research and technical development in the environmental field.

Under this program, policies of this type are called “environmental policies.”

Therefore, applicants should note that survey research and technical development which do not have a clear relationship with contribution to environmental policy are not eligible for funding.

Research projects which are to receive funding will be selected by examination from among candidate projects proposed by individual researchers and researcher groups in response to a public invitation.

“Competitive research fund” means that the projects selected for funding will be decided in a competitive environment based on the relative merits of proposals submitted in response to the public invitation.

Proposals will be examined by an outside evaluation committee made up of experts with knowledge and experience in the field, and will be judged based on their policy or scientific value and degree of contribution, the possibility of achieving the stated goals of the project, etc., considering environment-related trends in Japan and other countries.
