Rebun-to Island

Cape Sukoton
Located the farthest north of the island, it is a starting point for a trek around Cape Gorota and Cape Sukai. The scenery of the clear-blue ocean and Todo Island floating before the eyes are sure to sooth the soul.

Cluster of C. marcanthum Sw. var. rebunense
C. marcanthum Sw. var. rebunense is designated as one of the specified national endangered species of wild fauna and flora by the Law for the Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and it can be found in a limited location in the island. The colonies offer the sight of this plant from a wooden footpath.

Also the flower of Rebun-town. Seen all over the island between mid June and July. Can be seen in clumps on the slopes of the hills for 2 km from the Kafuka entrance to the Rebun forest road.

A great spot to view the sceneries of oddly shaped rocks such as the huge Momoiwa rock and Nekoiwa rock towering over the beautiful ocean.

This trekking course located on the southern Rebun-to Island presents fields of Leontopodium discolor and Trollius hondoensis, as well as the landscapes of beautiful ocean and cliffs.

Situated at the starting point of the Kutsugata course in Mt. Rishiri, the observatory located about 10 minutes away exhibits the sceneries of the Sea of Japan showing a bird's-eye view of towering Mt. Rishiri up close.
Kanro Natural Spring

Kanro Natural Spring is a spring water gushing from the third point of the Oshidomari course of Mt. Rishiri. It is a famous spring water that has been selected as one of the one hundred exquisite waters of Japan.

Mt. Rishiri
There are two hiking trails on Mt. Rishiri, which start from Oshidomari in the north coast and from Kutsugata in the west coast. From these starting points, it takes about five hours to get to the top. The visitors can enjoy dynamic mountain climbing against the backdrop of the beautiful ocean as an independent peak over the ocean. In addition, the upper part of the mountain is embedded with fields of alpine flora that allay one's fatigue.
  • 1)Please observe the Rishiri rules when climbing. (Refer to the park etiquette provided on an adverse side.)
  • 2)As the vicinity of the severely collapsed mountaintop is known to be treacherous and
    precipitous, please watch out for fallen rocks and not to fall.
  • 3)As there are steep rocky stretches and dangerous spots in the area higher than
    Mt. Sancho of the Kutsugata course, please be careful when walking.
Himenuma Swamp

Located about ten minutes by car from Oshidomari Port, it offers a trail that takes a visitor around a tranquil lake shore surrounded by forests. It is also a home to numerous wild birds such as black woodpeckers, making it an ideal spot for bird watching.
Otatomari Swamp

Situated southeast of the island, it is a place where you can go around the lake while gazing the reflections of Mt. Rishiri on the surface of the lake. The parking lot has a small store and is one of the major tourist attractions on the island.

The Sarobetsu Plain

Located along prefectural highway No. 106, the visitors can not only enjoy a stroll around the marsh ablaze with Nuphar japonicum, but also enjoy watching the landscapes of Mr. Rishiri floating on the Sea of Japan from the rooftop of a rest station.

The visitors can watch a field of Ezokanzou ablaze in summer from a wooden footpath with a periphery of about 1 km. There are also mountain cranberry and sundew, which are small marsh plants typical of the high moors.

The periphery of Panke Swamp, the largest marsh of the Sarobetsu Plain, shows numerous water birds during the season of migration, as well as Mt. Rishiri over the marsh.

Flowers unique to Rishiri-to Island. Beautiful yellow flowers bloom in the sand and gravel area at the top of Mt. Rishiri between mid July and mid August.

Thousands of large bean geese fly in to the Penke Swamp and Panke Swamp on the Sarobetsu Plain at the beginning of spring and fall.
