It refers to sea areas where appropriate human involvement—such as catching fish and cultivating seaweed—has increased the variety of living things and enhanced the sea's productivity.

Satoumi contains natural places such as eelgrass beds and tidal flats, where many fish, shellfish and other creatures live. Beyond that, it also plays an important role in keeping seawater clean.

Satoumi has been deeply connected to local fisheries, food culture, festivals and other aspects of people's history and daily life. It is a local treasure that has been protected and nurtured through people's wisdom and ingenuity.

About / Satoumi Creation

Satoumi has brought us abundant blessings, but it now faces a serious situation. The marine environment is deteriorating due to the loss of tidal flats from pollution and land reclamation, and, in recent years, rising water temperatures caused by climate change. The decline in the number of people engaged in fisheries and the weakening of people's connection with the sea are also major challenges.

We are advancing “Satoumi creation” as a new initiative suited to the Reiwa era. This is not simply about restoring the environment, but an activity that solves the challenges of the sea and the local community at the same time.

Satoumi creation cannot do without the following “virtuous cycle.”

Skillfully utilizing local resources to enrich daily life and connect this to activities that protect the marine environment

Story / Satoumi Creation in the Reiwa Era

To pass on Satoumi to the future in a rich state, the efforts of only some people will not last. “Satoumi creation in the Reiwa era” requires a framework in which diverse people—not only fishers and local residents but also companies and NPOs—are continuously involved.

We advance activities to protect the sea (conservation) and the appropriate use of local resources (utilization) at the same time, and establish a virtuous cycle in which the profits generated are reinvested into conservation activities.

The “Satoumi Creation in the Reiwa Era” model projects are initiatives that solve regional issues while protecting the richness of the sea, connecting this to a richer life for each one of us.
