Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in the environment
Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) encompass a wide range of substances such as pharmaceuticals, veterinary medicines, cosmetics and UV filters. A variety of PPCPs have been detected in environmental waters in Japan. As pharmaceuticals are substances intended to be biologically active, concerns have been raised about their possible adverse effects on organisms in the environment.
The Ministry of the Environment is collecting information on PPCPs in the environment and advancing its assessment of the environmental risks posed by PPCPs, utilising programs such as the Chemicals in the Environment (Environmental Survey and Monitoring of Chemicals) and the Initial Environmental Risk Assessment of Chemicals.
