Natural Hazard and Protected Area

The Ministry of Environment, Japan (MOEJ) organized the discussions about “the role of protected areas for disaster risk reduction”, one of the sub-themes in Stream 4 “Supporting Human Life” based on the result of 1st Asia Parks Congress and the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
MOEJ convened 12 sessions focusing on scientific knowledge, adaptation to climate change, case studies, etc., with the participation of government officials, researchers, and NGOs. At those sessions, various issues were discussed lively, such as importance of recognizing the role of protected areas for disaster risk reduction, accumulation of scientific knowledge for utilizing protected area as tools for disaster risk reduction, and need for cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders.
Based on the outcome of the discussions and knowledge from particular cases, MOEJ and IUCN worked out a handbook, “Protected Areas as Tools for Disaster Risk Reduction -A handbook for practitioners” and published it on the 3rd world conference disaster risk reduction in Sendai on March 2015.
