Holding of the Ninth Global Conference of the International Partnership for the SATOYAMA Initiative

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan is holding the Ninth Global Conference of the International Partnership for the SATOYAMA Initiative in Akita City, Japan, from July 8 to 11, 2023. This event is co-organized by secretariat of the International Partnership for the SATOYAMA Initiative (IPSI) Secretariat, Akita International University, and the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN).
As well as the IPSI General Assembly and local site visits, the Conference will include a public forum on the topic of youth innovation and its contributions to socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS).

1. Aims

The SATOYAMA Initiative began as a project advocated principally by MOE Japan and the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS). It aims to promote biodiversity conservation in and sustainable use of secondary natural environments formed and maintained by human activity. The IPSI is a worldwide collaboration established in order to promote the Initiative. The Ninth Global Conference is being held to share knowledge related to the IPSI Roadmap for achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, to work on future IPSI initiatives, and to consider contributions to new international framework.

1. International Partnership for the SATOYAMA Initiative (IPSI)
The IPSI is a worldwide collaboration between a wide range of organizations - such as national and local governments, research institutes, international institutions, NGOs, and private-sector businesses. It was founded during the Tenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10) in 2010 in order to promote the activities of the Initiative. Currently, 304 organizations from 78 countries and regions are members.

2. Socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS)
These are dynamic bio-cultural mosaic structures of habitats and land and sea uses where the interaction between people and landscapes and seascapes contributes to maintaining or enhancing biodiversity while also providing humans with the goods and services needed for their well-being.
