5th Japan-Thailand Environmental Policy Dialogue
1. On June 12, 2026, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) of Japan and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) of the Kingdom of Thailand held the 5th Thailand-Japan Environmental Policy Dialogue online with the participation of DOI Kentaro, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, MOEJ and Dr. Raweewan Bhuridej, Permanent Secretary, MNRE, from the Kingdom of Thailand.
2. At the Policy Dialogue, the two countries exchanged views on climate change actions, waste management, plastic pollution management and other topics, and agreed to continue and enhance the cooperation.
1. Background
The Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand signed a “Memorandum of Cooperation on Environmental Cooperation” in 2018 with the aim of comprehensive environmental cooperation, and organized the 1st Japan-Thailand Environmental Policy Dialogue. The 4th Environmental Dialogue and a signing ceremony to renew the Memorandum of Cooperation were held in 2024.

3. Outline of discussions
The two countries agreed to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of climate change measures, waste management, plastic pollution management, and biodiversity conservation.
1) Climate change measures
Thailand proposed cooperation in climate change actions, resilience improvement program, and technologies for greenhouse gas emission reduction. Japan explained cooperation in early warning systems, Global Stocktake, and Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM).
Both Ministries agreed to continue close communications with the aim of strengthening ongoing cooperation and deepening understanding for further cooperation.
2) Waste management and plastic pollution
The two countries agreed to continue cooperation towards more effective monitoring of marine and coastal plastic pollutions, implementation of pilot projects concerning E-waste, and joint initiatives towards WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulatory development in Thailand.
Furthermore, both Ministries recognized the importance of capacity building and adoption of innovative solutions to protect marine and coastal biodiversity.
3) Other issues
The two countries agreed to share information and experiences regarding wetlands to promote the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, and to build a common understanding of the importance of measures to address the challenges posed by invasive alien species.
