Launch of OECD Environmental Performance Reviews: Japan 2025
The OECD conducted a review in 2024 of Japan's environmental performance and launched a report compiling its results - "OECD Environmental Performance Reviews: Japan 2025" on March 21, 2025.
1. Overview of the Environmental Performance Review (EPR)
The Environmental Performance Review (EPR) is a mutual review of and recommendations on environmental policy initiatives by member countries at the OECD Working Party on Environmental Performance within the Environmental Policy Committee (examining countries this time were France, Germany and the Republic of Korea). The report compiling results of the review was launched by the OECD on March 21, 2025.
Japan was previously reviewed in 1993, 2002 and 2010, and this is the fourth review.
The recommendations in the report do not impose any legal obligations on the country reviewed, but rather aim to help the country to improve their environmental policies.

2. Summary of the Report
The report consists mainly of "Assessment and Recommendations" and is organized into the following two chapters:
In Chapter 1, under the theme of "Towards sustainable development," the OECD analyzed Japan's environmental efforts from a perspective of "sustainable growth" including its efforts to adapt to more severe and frequent disasters caused by climate change, and analyzed the mainstreaming of biodiversity in the economy from OECD’s own perspective.
In Chapter 2, under the theme of "Leveraging synergies and place-based approaches for the green transformation," the importance of synergistic approaches was discussed while highlighting Japan's efforts for a “Circulating and Ecological Economy” and “Decarbonization Leading Areas.”
