India-Japan Environmental Business Promotion Seminar - Exploring Collaboration Opportunities toward Decarbonized and Sustainable Society in India

The seminar was held to provide information on technologies and initiatives that contribute to solving India's environmental problems and building a sustainable society. In particular, the seminar focused on sharing information on the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) program, the project development process, good practices and promising Japanese technologies.
The panel discussion focused on the potential for cooperation between Japan and India in realizing a decarbonized and sustainable society, and the role of technical cooperation in India's transition to a net-zero society. Furthermore, business negotiations between Japanese and Indian companies were held during the business networking session to explore new business opportunities.

Provided an introduction to India's emissions as a proportion of the global total, its position in terms of economic growth, its decarbonization policies and progress, and its future goals and policy outlook. Also mentioned the use of international carbon markets as a means to promote decarbonization technologies, and noted the potential for cooperation with Japan in the 14 eligible project types under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement announced by the Indian government.

Panel Discussion
<Overview>

The representatives from the Indian and Japanese governments, private companies and aid organization participated in a panel discussion on Japan-India environmental cooperation.
The Indian government highlighted the long-term cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector and introduced the energy conservation guidelines for large industries and small and medium-sized enterprises that it had developed in cooperation with the Energy Conservation Center, Japan. The Japanese government expressed its hope for the continuation of Japan-India environmental technology cooperation and for the JCM to promote the compatibility of decarbonization and economic growth, and stated that cooperation between the government and the private sector is essential for the realization of a net-zero society.
The private companies expressed that building a net-zero society requires large-scale technological deployment and emphasized that their expectations for the use of Japanese technology and financial resources taking into account India's unique conditions and environment, as well as carbon credit systems, such as the JCM. In addition, Japanese development aid organizations emphasized the importance of raising awareness among all stakeholders, including the government and private companies, in order to mainstream investments in clean and energy-efficient technologies.

Emphasized the importance of resource efficiency and a circular economy in creating a sustainable socio-economic system in India, and noted that the Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Coalition, established during India's G20 presidency, is leading the promotion of these on behalf of industry. Also mentioned the importance of public-private partnerships and the formulation of time-bound action plans to promote energy security, as well as the possibility of Japan-India cooperation in areas such as value chains and supply chain management, using the example of battery storage, and welcomed the participation of Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises.

Expressed his gratitude to the participated organizations, and emphasized the importance of international cooperation, as decarbonization is difficult to achieve through the efforts of a single country alone. Also mentioned that accelerating investment through credit mechanisms is effective, and expressed the intention to promote investment from Japan to India through the JCM framework between Japan and India.
