Outcome of the 22nd Meeting of the Article 6.4 Supervisory Body

1. The 22nd meeting of the Article 6.4 Supervisory Body was held in Bonn, Federal Republic of Germany, from July 27 to 30, 2026. From Japan, TAKAHASHI Kentaro, Deputy Director, Office for the Joint Crediting Mechanism and International Carbon Market, Ministry of the Environment, Japan, attended the meeting as an alternate member of Asia and Pacific Group.

2. The Supervisory Body adopted the “Mechanism methodology: Electricity generation from renewable sources connected to an electricity system.” It also agreed to accredit a new entity as Designated Operational Entity (DOE), for validation, verification and certification functions of greenhouse gas emission reductions under the Article 6.4 mechanism.

3. Japan will actively contribute to the negotiations on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Drawing on its experience in implementing over 300 projects that contribute to decarbonization under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) pursuant to Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, it will also contribute to the development of rules under Article 6.4 (UN-administered) of the Paris Agreement, thereby contributing to the swift implementation of Article 6 as a whole. Moreover, it will work to expand and accelerate JCM projects, taking into account the outcome of this meeting of the Supervisory Body.

2. Accreditation of Designated Operational Entities (DOEs)

Under the Article 6.4 mechanism, a new entity has been accredited as DOE, for validation, verification and certification functions*2 of greenhouse gas emission reductions.
