Results of the 15th Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia

1. In order to realize Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) in Asia, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, held the 15th Regional EST Forum in Asia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, co-organized with the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) and other organizations, from October 24 to 26, 2023.
 
2. Under the theme of “Investing in Sustainable Transport: Catalyzing Economic and Social Development in the SDGs Era,” the Forum shared policies in each country and exchanged a wide spectrum of opinions on EST, as well as following up on the progress made in each country towards the accomplishment of goals set forth in the Aichi 2030 Declaration* adopted in the 14th Forum. 
 
* The Aichi 2030 Declaration upholds EST goals to be achieved by 2030, in line with international trends, including the SDGs and the Paris Agreement, in order to accelerate the movement towards the decarbonization of Asia

Senior officials of the governments (ministries of environment, transportation, etc.) of 18 countries in Asia*, senior officials of municipal governments in Asian countries, academic and other experts in the areas of transportation and the environment, officials from international organizations, etc.
* Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, Vietnam and Malaysia

■ Major results

(1) Under the theme of “Investing in Sustainable Transport: Catalyzing Economic and Social Development in the SDGs Era,” presentations on best practices, etc. were made by Asian countries and international organizations in each session. Japan introduced regional EST model projects in Japan (initiative in Shikaoi Town, Hokkaido), etc.

(2) Among the goals in the Aichi 2030 Declaration, progress made towards achievement, such as the policies of each country, was followed up on for Goal 1a: Low-Carbon (climate change mitigation), Goal 2: Road safety, and Goal 6: National access and connectivity, and the progress was confirmed.
