Results of The 2nd Indonesia-Japan Environment Week

1.   From May 11 to 12, 2026, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) co-organized “The 2nd Indonesia-Japan Environment Week” in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia, with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan, and the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia (KLH).  

2.   “The 2nd Indonesia-Japan Environment Week” hosted a series of integrated events, including thematic seminars, business pitches, and technology exhibitions. Approximately 750 people participating in person and approximately 370 people online engaged in discussions in the environmental field of both countries, and business matching.

3.   On May 11, 2026, MOEJ and KLH also held the High-level Policy Dialogue and the Technical Dialogue based on the Memorandum of Cooperation on Environmental Cooperation (MoC).

4.   In the High-level Policy Dialogue, both sides confirmed the progress of the environmental cooperative activities in each area, such as climate change, waste management and environmental pollution, and exchanged opinions on the direction of future cooperation. In the Technical Dialogue, both sides exchanged opinions on concrete policies and cooperative activities concerning hazardous and chemical waste and environmental management in addition to the agendas of the High-level Policy Dialogue.

(5)  Results of each session
     In the High-Level Session, beginning with Opening Remarks by Mr. Erik Teguh Primiantoro, Senior Advisor to the Minister for International Relations and Environmental Diplomacy, KLH, and DOI Kentaro, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, MOEJ, Welcome Remarks by H.E. Mr. Muhammad Lutfi, Chairman, Indonesia-Japan Bilateral Committee, KADIN, Mr. MYOCHIN Mitsuru, Chargés d'Affaires ad interim, Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, Mr. Dudi Gardesi Asikin, Head of Environmental Agency, Jakarta Capital City Government, and Prof. Dr. TAKEMOTO Kazuhiko, Council Chair, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) were delivered. They attracted great expectations for cooperation and development through business in the environmental field of both countries.

     Moreover, seminars and business pitches focused on specific subjects, including circular economy, PaSTI (Partnership to Strengthen Transparency for co-Innovation), pollution control, climate change action, CEFIA (Cleaner Energy Future Initiative for ASEAN), circular value chaings (hosted by ASEAN-Japan Centre), were integrally held. Participants from public and private sectors of both countries deepened discussions on specific technologies for solving issues, roles and cooperation of both countries.

     Within the venue, approximately 30 Japanese companies and organizations held exhibitions, and delivered presentations at seminars and business pitches, to explain their technologies to visitors towards creating business opportunities in the environmental field.

【Discussion summary】

     In the High-level Policy Dialogue, both sides confirmed the progress of the environmental cooperative activities in each area, such as climate change, waste management and environmental pollution, and exchanged opinions on the direction of future cooperation. In the Technical Dialogue, both sides exchanged opinions on concrete policies and cooperative activities concerning hazardous and chemical waste and environmental management in addition to the agendas of the High-level Policy Dialogue.


(1)  Climate change
     For the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) being implemented between Japan and Indonesia, both countries recognized the importance of future progress under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and confirmed that they would continue detailed discussions at the working level regarding the amendment of implementation rules and guidelines to ensure consistency with relevant laws and regulations, as well as the expansion of the JCM into new sectors.

(2)  Waste management
     Both sides have confirmed their continued cooperation in developing the waste-to-energy project in Indonesia and towards the facility’s operation.
     They also exchanged opinions on appropriate collection, recycling, and the Extended Producer Responsibility policy for e-waste and confirmed that they would deepen cooperation.

(3)  Hazardous and Chemical waste
     Japan introduced cooperation towards the implementation of the “Bali Declaration on Combating Illegal Trade in Mercury,” which was formulated under Indonesia’s leadership, support for measures for artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), and, as a future topic, measures to address emissions from coal combustion processes in coal-fired power plants and industrial boilers. Both sides confirmed that they would continue discussions at the working level.

(4)  Environmental management
・Water and air pollution
     Japan introduced the update on efforts to improve water quality in the Citarum River and the feasibility study for the introduction of a new wastewater treatment system, while Indonesia introduced its integrated environmental data monitoring system of air and water qualities across the country. Both sides confirmed that they would continue discussions on environmental pollution.

・Marine plastic litter
     Japan introduced its initiatives, including international guidelines for marine litter monitoring and analysis methods, a mapping database for marine plastic litter, and research on plastic litter discharge volumes in Indonesian rivers. Both sides confirmed that they would continue cooperation including capacity-building training in both countries.
