Results of the visit to the Kingdom of Bhutan by NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister of the Environment, Japan
1. NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister of the Environment of Japan, visited the Kingdom of Bhutan from July 29 to 31, 2023.
2. While in the Kingdom of Bhutan, he had an audience with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, King of Bhutan, and exchanged views on Japan-Bhutan environmental cooperation with H.E. Lyonchhen Dr. Lotay Tshering, Prime Minister, H.E. Lyonpo Dr. Tandi Dorji, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, and H.E. Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.
3. Minister Nishimura also attended the opening ceremony of an electric vehicle (EV) charging station supported by the Government of Japan through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

1. Audience with His Majesty the King of Bhutan and exchange of views with relevant ministers
NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister of the Environment of Japan, had an audience with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, King of Bhutan. He also had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, and paid courtesy calls on H.E. Lyonchhen Dr. Lotay Tshering, Prime Minister, and H.E. Lyonpo Dr. Tandi Dorji, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade.
(1) Audience with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, King of Bhutan
On July 31, 2023, Minister Nishimura had an audience with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, King of Bhutan, and exchanged views on future cooperation on the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and Early Warning Systems. Minister Nishimura stated that he will continue to support sustainable development in Bhutan and work to further deepen exchanges between Japan and Bhutan.
(2) Opinion exchange with H.E. Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources
On July 30, 2023, Minister Nishimura had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Bhutan, to discuss future cooperation in the field of the environment.
Minister Nishimura introduced the waste management projects implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which have contributed to improving the living environment and public health in Bhutan.
In response, H.E. Minister Sharma expressed gratitude for Japan’s cooperation on waste issues and requested further support for the swift establishment of the JCM and Early Warning Systems.
Regarding the JCM, based on the suggestion of Minister Nishimura, opportunities of information exchange will be created to deepen understanding in Bhutan.

2. EV charging station opening ceremony
On July 30, 2023, Minister Nishimura attended the opening ceremony of an EV charging station supported by the Government of Japan through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Minister Nishimura expressed the hope that climate change action in the transport sector in Bhutan will be advanced through this project.
