Results of the Ninth Global Conference of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan co-organized the Ninth Global Conference of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) in Akita City, Japan, from July 8 to 11, 2023. This event was organized by the IPSI Secretariat, co-organized by Akita International University, and the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN).
As a part of this Conference, a public forum was also organized on July 8 on the theme Reshaping Our Future: Youth Empowerment and Contribution to Living in Harmony with Nature.
From MOE, Japan, Parliamentary Vice-Minister KUNISADA Isato participated in the Conference and delivered his speech at the closing ceremony.

1. Aims

The Satoyama Initiative began as a project advocated principally by MOE Japan and the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS). It aims to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of landscapes and seascapes formed and maintained by human activity. The IPSI is a worldwide collaboration established in order to promote the Initiative. The Ninth Global Conference was held to share knowledge related to the IPSI Roadmap for achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, to work on future IPSI initiatives, and to consider contributions to the new international framework.

[Outline of outcomes]
・A total of 187 representatives from 38 IPSI member organizations participated in the Conference.
・As Conference Chair, Prof. TAKEUCHI Kazuhiko (President, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies) was elected. The IPSI Strategy and Plan of Action (2023-2030) was adopted and progress status since the Eighth Global Conference was reported. The new IPSI Plan of Action set the following five strategic objectives until 2030:
 ・Knowledge Co-Production, Management, and Uptake
 ・Institutional Frameworks and Capacity Development
 ・Area-Based Conservation Measures
 ・Ecosystem Restoration
 ・Sustainable Value Chain Development
・As a part of this Conference, a public forum was also organized on the theme ‘Reshaping Our Future: Youth Empowerment and Contribution to Living in Harmony with Nature' with the participation of representatives from IPSI member organizations, the governments of each country, and NGOs.

[Outline of outcome]
・On the theme ‘Reshaping Our Future: Youth Empowerment and Contribution to Living in Harmony with Nature’, approx. 200 people participated in the forum.
・In the keynote speeches, explanations were provided about the role of the Satoyama Initiative toward the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and power of youth to implement the framework. In the panel discussions, participants including representatives from NGOs and the governments of each country discussed the potential of youth engagement in promoting socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS), intergenerational knowledge transfer, overcoming barriers to youth engagement and future paths.

1. International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI)
The IPSI is a worldwide collaboration between a wide range of organizations - such as national and local governments, research institutes, international institutions, NGOs, and private-sector entities. It was founded during the Tenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) in 2010 in order to promote the activities of the Initiative. Currently, 304 organizations from 78 countries and regions are members.

2. Socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS)
These are dynamic mosaics of habitats and land uses where the harmonious interaction between people and nature maintains biodiversity while providing humans with the goods and services needed for their livelihoods, survival and well-being in a sustainable manner.
