Launch of the Project to Promote Private Sector Engagement in Biodiversity Conservation through OECMs, in Collaboration with IUCN and the Keidanren Nature Conservation Council (KNCC), and Outcome of an Online Meeting

1. In collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Keidanren Nature Conservation Council (KNCC), the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) of Japan have launched a project aimed at promoting private sector engagement in biodiversity conservation through Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs). As part of this initiative, an online meeting hosted by IUCN was convened on February 25, 2026, bringing together government agencies, companies, NGOs, and other stakeholders.

2. Through this project, good practices from around the world related to private sector engagement in OECMs will be collected and compiled into a practical guidebook serving as a concrete reference for private sector participation in OECMs. The guidebook is planned to be presented at the seventeenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), scheduled to be held in October 2026, and, based on feedback received at the meeting, the final version is expected to be published in December 2026.
