International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22)

1.May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) sanctioned by the United Nations, and events to popularize and raise awareness among the public under the international theme are held throughout the world. 

2.In Japan, the Ministry of the Environment, related organizations of the J-GBF*, etc. will hold events to experience, study, and make actions on biodiversity throughout Japan, during the period around May 22.

3.The Ministry of the Environment will hold a symposium jointly with UNU-IAS*, GEOC*, and NACS-J*, under the theme of "From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity," on May 15, 2023.

1.International Day for Biological Diversity

International Day for Biological Diversity is an international day sanctioned by the United Nations for popularizing and raising awareness on issues regarding biodiversity. Commemorating the adoption of the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity on May 22, 1992, at the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity, May 22 every year is sanctioned as the International Day for Biological Diversity.
Every year, various events are held around this day throughout the world, under the international theme to popularize and raise awareness among the public for the conservation and mainstreaming of biodiversity. This year's theme is “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity.”

2. International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 Symposium

International Day for Biological Diversity 2023 Symposium; From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity.
 
○ Purpose
Under the international theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity "From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity," the symposium will share information on trends in Japan and abroad on efforts towards achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which is the new international goal for 2030 adopted in December 2022.
The symposium also aims to share and disseminate case examples of regional activities and achievements thereof on the conservation of biodiversity and the restoration of ecosystems in cooperation with various sectors, and to accelerate regional efforts in conjunction with the international movements.

○ Venue: Elizabeth Rose Hall on the 5th floor of the UNU Headquarters building
