IAEA-MOE Japan 1st Experts Meeting on Volume Reduction and Recycling of Removed Soil Arising from Decontamination Activities

Overview The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will hold the 1st Experts Meeting on Volume Reduction and Recycling of Removed Soil at the request of the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan from May 8 to 12 , to discuss measures taken by the MOE Japan to promote the recycling of removed soil, final disposal in the future as well as building public understanding, and site visits by the IAEA in Fukushima Prefecture will be conducted.

Upon the request of the MOE Japan, the IAEA will hold the Experts Meeting on volume reduction and recycling of removed soil arising from decontamination activities, and provide assessment, advice and support.
 
This is the first framework between the IAEA and the MOE Japan, related to the recycling of removed soil, final disposal and public understanding on recycling of removed soil and final disposal.
The first meeting will be held as below scheduled, and during the meeting, views and opinions will be exchanged between the IAEA, the MOE Japan and experts.
 
Currently three meetings are planned to be held, and the final report of the meetings will be drafted by the IAEA followed by submission to the MOE Japan, and will be made open to public.

 (Site visits in Fukushima Prefecture are scheduled for May 9 - 10, 2023.)
(A courtesy visit to the Minister of the Environment is scheduled on May 12, 2023.)

Media Coverage

  • In principle, the Experts Meeting is closed, but some courtesy visits and site visits will be open to the media.
  • Detail itinerary will be noticed separately.
  • A courtesy visit to the Minister of the Environment, Japan  will also be announced separately as soon as the time and details are finalized.
