The 10th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) Side Event: Actions to Harnessing Synergies between the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals: Enhancing City to City Collaboration in the Asia-Pacific Region

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, is hosting the 10th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD)* side event "Actions to Harnessing Synergies between the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals: Enhancing City to City Collaboration in the Asia-Pacific Region" together with the Embassy of Japan in Thailand and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). This side event will share the various synergistic actions taken by cities and regions in Asia and the Pacific to realize the global goals. It will also showcase how such actions can accelerate the progress towards sustainable and net-zero societies.

1. Background

Most of the Asia-Pacific region is not on track to achieve the Paris Agreement and the SDGs. In fact, a recent report from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) estimates that the SDGs will be achieved in 2065, a major delay in implementation. For this reason, maximizing synergies between climate actions and the SDGs is crucial to accelerate progress. In this context, the third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the SDGs**, held in July 2022, underlined the wide variety of city-level actions that can deliver on the climate and sustainability agendas.

This year’s event will highlight various synergistic actions in Asia Pacific cities. It will also showcase how such actions can contribute to sustainable net-zero transitions while protecting biodiversity. The event will finally underline that Decarbonization Leading Areas, city-to-city collaboration and the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) can accelerate the implementation of SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
