Results of the India-Japan Environment Week

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India (MoEFCC) held the “India-Japan Environment Week” with the relevant organizations of both countries from January 12 to 13, 2023, in Delhi, India, in combination with online hybrid system.
 
On January 12, NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister of the Environment, Japan, and H.E. Mr. Bhupender YADAV, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India, had a bilateral meeting and agreed to move forward the cooperation between Japan and India as Presidencies of the G7 and the G20 respectively this year.
 
On January 12 and 13, Minister NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister Bhupender YADAV, Mr. WAKAMORI Susumu, President of Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India (JCCII), and Mr. Subhrakant PANDA, President of the Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), delivered opening remarks on the Environment Week, followed by keynote speeches and a plenary session concerning building a decarbonized society. Following seminars focusing on the individual issues of Marine Plastic Debris and Waste Management, Carbon Market Mechanism, Environmental Technologies, Air Pollution and Water Pollution were held. Participants from the public and private sectors of both countries had in depth discussions on solution and technologies for environmental issues as well as the rol of each stakeholder and cooperation of both countries. 
 
Furthermore, for the aim of creating business opportunities in the environmental sector of both countries, exhibitions and presentations by enterprises and other business matching events were held toward further business development in India.

Background/Objective:

MOE Japan and MoEFCC had been advancing environmental cooperation by means such as holding policy dialogues since the signing of the memorandum of cooperation in October 2018. As part of the efforts, MOE Japan and MoEFCC held the “India-Japan Environment Week”, which integrates high-level policy discussions, environmental seminars, exhibitions, and business matching for creating business opportunities in the environmental sector in Japan and India in an effective and efficient manner.

Summary of the results
Japan and India assume the G7 and G20 presidencies this year. Minister Nishimura and Minister Yadav, who will chair the environment and climate track, agreed on the necessity for both countries to lead discussions on the environmental sector and confirmed that the two countries will coordinate their collaboration in areas such as lifestyle change, marine litter, adaptation, and other fields, as part of concrete cooperation of G7 and G20. In addition, the ministers also exchanged opinions on early establishment of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM).

(2) Opening ceremony and seminars (January 12 and 13)
Minister Nishimura and Minister Yadav and more than 700 people (including more than 500 on-site participants) from central and local governments of Japan and India, related organizations, Embassy of Japan, JICA, research institutes, private companies and others participated in the event. Minister Nishimura, Minister Yadav, Mr. Wakamori, President of Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India (JCCII), and Mr. Panda, President of the Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) delivered opening remarks of the Environment Week, followed by keynote speeches and a plenary session concerning building a decarbonized society. Afterwards, six seminars focusing on individual issues were held. Participants from public and private sectors of both countries had in depth discussions on solution technologies for environmental issues as well as the roles and cooperation of both countries.
 
In the opening remarks, Minister Nishimura expressed the importance of Japan-India collaboration for the G7 and the G20 presidencies this year and gratitude for participation in the India-Japan Environment Week. He also expressed his expectation that this event will expand environmental business opportunities for both countries and contribute to India’s sustainable development. Minister Yadav expressed his expectations for Japanese technologies through the Environment Week and presented the lifestyle change campaign (LiFE) where India is pouring efforts.

(3) Exhibition and business matching
In the event venue, 17 Japanese and Indian enterprises/groups exhibited panels and 20 enterprises/groups made presentations to introduce technologies and activities for contributing to solutions of environmental challenges. In addition, 24 enterprises/groups held online exhibitions up to January 31. Through these business matching events, Japanese and Indian companies are expected to further promote their business opportunities.
