8th JCM Partner Countries’ High-level Meeting at COP27

On November 16, 2022, the 8th JCM Partner Countries’ High-level Meeting was held at the COP27 Japan Pavilion in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
The participants welcomed the contribution of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) to the achievement of NDCs and sustainable development in partner countries. It was also confirmed that cooperation among partner countries will be strengthened for further implementation of the JCM.
Japan will continue to contribute to global decarbonization through the implementation of the JCM.

Outline of the 8th JCM Partner Countries’ High-level Meeting

NISHIMURA Akihiro, Minister of the Environment, Japan, and representatives from 17 out of the 24 JCM partner countries participated in the meeting. Participants welcomed the JCM’s contribution to the achievement of NDCs and sustainable development in the partner countries through more than 230 greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions projects. It was also confirmed that cooperation among the partner countries will be strengthened for further implementation of the JCM.
MOE Japan will implement the JCM as a market mechanism consistent with the Paris Agreement Article 6 and contribute to  1) global GHG emission reductions and removals,  2) achievement of NDCs and sustainable development in partner countries, and  3)  efforts towards global decarbonization.

Outline of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM):

  • Japan will establish and implement the JCM in order to quantitatively evaluate contributions of Japan to GHG emission reductions and removals, which are achieved through the diffusion of, among others, leading decarbonizing technologies, products, systems, services and infrastructures as well as through the implementation of measures in developing countries and others, and in order to use such contributions to achieve Japan’s NDC.
  • Since 2013, Japan has established the JCM with 24* partner countries and over 230 projects have been selected.
