MOE Japan Selects 20 City-to-City Collaboration Projects to Support the Decarbonization of Overseas Cities (Second Round)

1.In collaboration with local partners overseas, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, has been conducting the City-to-City Collaboration Projects to support decarbonization in developing countries by utilizing Japanese companies’ and cities’ technologies, experiences, and expertise related to decarbonization.

2.MOE Japan invited applications for this project, and as a result of screening, the following 2 City-to-City Collaboration Projects were selected.
(1)Urasoe City, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan The State of Ailai, Republic of Palau

(2)Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan Bali Province, Republic of Indonesia

3.Since MOE Japan launched this project in 2013, including the results of this time, 45 cities/regions (mainly 13 Asian countries) and 20 Japanese cities have participated in this project.
Project outline:
The purpose of this project is to share Japanese cities’ experiences and expertise related to decarbonization, and to effectively and efficiently support decarbonization in cities of developing countries. In collaboration with Japanese research institutions, private companies, and universities, local governments in Japan promote the identification of projects and feasibility studies to introduce decarbonization technologies and services in overseas cities.

In addition, Japanese cities will support overseas cities in capacity building for decarbonization through cooperation in their planning, evaluating technologies, and sharing the selection process. After the implementation of this project, it is also expected that the project will further reduce greeenhouse gas emissions through introduction of facilities which utilize the fund mechanism of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Project and the commercialization of the services.

By implementing this project, MOE Japan will strongly promote an international decarbonization domino effect that will spread from the Japanese cities to the overseas cities.
