Adoption of Tunis Action Guidance - The Third Assembly of the African Clean Cities Platform (ACCP)

  1. The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan jointly organized the Third Assembly of the ACCP online together with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the City of Yokohama, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), from the 25th to 29th of July 2022, in line with the purpose of the TICAD 8 Partner Project held at Tunis City in Republic of Tunisia.
  2. In the opening remarks, YAMAGUCHI Tsuyoshi, Minister of the Environment, Japan, participated via a video message and spoke about the importance of proper waste management and the circular economy in Africa.
  3. The “Tunis Action Guidance for the ACCP”, which indicates the direction of the ACCP activities for the next three years, was adopted as the outcome document.

Outcome of the Assembly

A total of 566 people from 48 countries participated in the Assembly, which was held entirely online in consideration of COVID-19. The “Tunis Action Guidance for the ACCP” was adopted as the outcome document of the Third Assembly for the ACCP dictating that ACCP would aim do the following actions for the coming three years in addition to further promotion of the 11 items of the Yokohama Action Guidance adopted at the Second ACCP General Meeting:

 ○Dissemination of the “Fukuoka Method” (semi-aerobic landfill system) for proper management of landfill sites towards a decarbonized society
 ○Reduction, sound management and recovery of plastic waste, health-care waste and e-waste 

The new Guidance will be reflected in the upcoming TICAD 8 to be held in from August 27th to 28th.
