MOE Japan Selects Entrusted and Subsidized Projects for the "FY2022 Demonstration Project for a Plastic Resource Circulation System toward a Decarbonized Society" Program (First Round)

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, has decided to reform the use of conventional plastics in order to accelerate the establishment of a resource recycling system that will contribute to the creation of a decarbonized society.

In this Program, MOE Japan carries out demonstration projects necessary for solving technical challenges and achieving commercialization by developing materials that will replace plastics derived from fossil resources and upgrading plastic recycling technologies and systems.

For the FY2022 Program, MOE Japan called for applications for entrusted projects from February 7 to March 18, 2022, and applications for subsidized projects from April 15 to May 23, 2022, respectively.

As a result of the preliminary screening based on application documents and the review by the Evaluation and Review Committee composed of experts, MOE Japan selected the projects indicated below.

Outline of the "FY2022 Demonstration Project for a Plastic Resource Circulation System toward a Decarbonized Society" Program

MOE Japan has decided to gradually reform the use of conventional plastics in order to accelerate the establishment of a plastic resource recycling system that will contribute to the creation of a low-carbon society and a circular economy. To this end, MOE Japan has been promoting the transition to bioplastics, etc. derived from renewable resources that replace plastics derived from fossil resources.
In addition, MOE Japan carries out the following projects with the aim of reducing energy-derived CO2 emissions in the entire plastic resource recycling system by upgrading recycling technologies and systems for difficult-to-recycle plastic materials.
(i) Demonstration projects for the transition to CO2-saving bioplastics (renewable resources) that replace fossil-derived plastics and for their societal implementation
(ii) Demonstration projects for establishment of a recycling process of plastics and CO2 emission reduction

Selection results

Under this Program, MOE Japan received 11 applications for entrusted projects and 19 applications for subsidized projects, and as a result of a preliminary screening of application documents and a review by the Evaluation and Review Committee composed of experts, it selected 5 entrusted projects (4 replacement projects and 1 recycling project) and 12 subsidized projects (6 replacement projects and 6 recycling projects) as shown below.
