Agreement Reached with UNEP-IMEO and Other Organizations to Utilize GOSAT-GW at the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2025

< Simultaneous announcement by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry >
1. The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), together with the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) and others, participated in the “LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2025” held by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) on June 20, 2025, and announced that they would contribute to international efforts to mitigate methane leakage from the liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply chain by utilizing the data from the Global Observing SATellite for Greenhouse gases and Water cycle (GOSAT-GW), which is scheduled for launch soon.

2. As one of the outcome documents of the meeting, a joint statement on technical cooperation and data transparency on methane reduction from the LNG value chain in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme's International Methane Gas Emissions Observatory (UNEP-IMEO) was released by METI, Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), NIES, and MOE.

3. Based on this joint statement, MOE and NIES will provide GOSAT-GW data to UNEP-IMEO, so that it will be used in an international information provision system for monitoring methane emissions and taking actions.
