These waters extend from the western part of Izu Islands and the Shichi-to Island and Iou-Jima ridges extending a long way north to the Shikoku Basin. These waters include numerous seamounts. They are characterized by the environment resulting from this chain of sea mounts (Japan Coast Guard, Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department, 1985).
