Numerous species of bottom fish and crustacea live on the Kitami-Yamato Bank, which is highly productive. In the northern area of waters 301 it extends to the northern Kuril Islands and is more than 3000 m deep, connecting to the flat Kuril Basin (Japan Oceanographic Data Center, 1985).
