These are the waters in the vicinity of Rebun Island on the Sea of Japan off northern Hokkaido. Seaweed beds unfold in the coastal zone, where typical Rishiri kombu kelp beds form. This is the area of the northern limit for wakame (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). In the shallow waters where sand banks form, Japanese sand lance live, and these are important waters for sea birds that depend heavily on Japanese sand lance (Kato, personal communication).
