These are the waters in the vicinity of Teuri and Yagishiri Islands 30 km west of the port of Haboro. The northwest coast of Teuri Island is home to continuous cliffs where common guillemot (ororon), rhinoceros auklet, spectacled guillemot, Japanese cormorant, slaty-backed gull and other sea birds have been confirmed to breed, and these have been designated a natural monument by Japan, as the Teuri Island Sea Bird Breeding Ground. Off the coasts of both of these islands are seaweed beds. In the shallow waters where sand banks form, Japanese sand lance live, and these are very important waters for sea birds that depend heavily on Japanese sand lance and the Japanese anchovy that migrate north through the Sea of Japan (Kato, Sakurai, personal communication).
