These are the waters in the vicinity of Awashima Island off the northern Niigata Prefecture coast. As at Sadogashima Island, off Awashima Island, there are communities of Sargassum araii (Sargassum araii is distributed only at Sadogashima Island, Awa Island, and Tobishima Island) (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). It also is a breeding ground for streaked shearwater and Japanese cormorant (and a natural monument).
