Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These are the waters in the vicinity of the Nanatsu-jima Islands (an island group consisting of seven islands) in the Sea of Japan about 20 km north of the city of Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture. The Nanatsu Islands can be divided broadly into the northern (Ohshima, Karimata, and Tatsu Islands) and southern (Aramiko, Eboshi, Akajima, and Mikuriya Islands) groups. These waters are home to breeding colonies of streaked shearwater, Japanese murrelet (an IUCN endangered species), black-tailed gull and other sea birds, and they have been named an IBA (BirdLife International, 2012). The waters in the vicinity of the island group are home to expansive Sargassum beds, where numerous rare warm-water species are said to be distributed (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
