These shallow waters are located off the coast of Fukui Prefecture. The natural reefs located near the boundary between the shore zone and offshore zone are large natural reefs (Matsudashi, Oguri) making up part of the Echizen bank chain, forming a steep precipice at which the water depths range from 300 m to between 10 and 20 m at the shallowest. Upwelling currents arise from this sea-floor form, with abundant biota. For this reason it is known as one of the best fishing spots in the Sea of Japan and is highly productive. In these waters live Pacific bluefin tuna, a subject of international concern regarding decreasing resources (Coastal Oceanography Research Committee of the Japan Oceanographical Society of Japan, 1985; Japan Fisheries Agency, 2002).
