These are the waters of the river-mouth tidal mud flats at the mouth of the Kotou River and vicinity. These waters include a habitat and breeding ground for small-scale whiting (Shigeta and Usuki, 2011; Shigeta et al., 2013a, Shigeta, 2008) and are home to an abundance of species that are rare nationwide, including Asian clam, Cerithidea ornata, Cerithidea largillierti, Iravadia sakaguchii, Platyvindex sp. and others (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
