Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These waters include the vicinity of the mouths of the Wakayama and Kii rivers and Tomogashima Island. At the mouths of the Kii and Wakayama rivers abundant benthic organisms can be seen, with the largest populations in the Kinki region for fiddler crab, Uca lactea lactea, Macrophthalmus abbreviatus, and Gymnogobius uchidai in particular. Also numerous are Mesochaetopterus japonicus, Iravadia sakaguchii, and other rare species (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). Since it is fringed by natural rocky shores and pebble beaches, Tomogashima has a high degree of biodiversity. On its pebble beaches live Luciogobius grandis, while Callytron yuasai can be seen on its rocky shores. In the Kitan Strait, wakame and agar beds have formed (Ministry of the Environment, 2001; Wada, 2008). In recent years finless porpoises have been seen around Tomogashima as well (Hirajima, personal communication).
