These are the waters in the vicinity of Hachijo Island. These waters are home to a breeding colony of Japanese murrelet (an IUCN endangered species) (BirdLife International, 2012). They also are home to expansive seaweed communities, mainly kombu kelp and Sargassum fulvellum (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). In addition, the waters in the vicinity of Hachijo Island are important green turtle feeding waters (Shimada, 2013).
