Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These waters extend from Cape Ushinokubi in the south of the Shimokita Peninsula along the west coast to Cape Oma and then to the mouth of the Noushi River on the northern coast. Unlike the Mutsu Bay ecosystem dominated by eel grass beds on the muddy and sandy sea floor, these highly productive waters feature a continual ecosystem dominated by seaweed beds. They serve as breeding and spawning grounds for many species of bird and fish. Eight species of kombu kelp grow off the Shimokita Peninsula coast around Cape Oma, including Laminaria japonica kelp, thin kombu kelp, Saccharina sculpera, wakame, aowakame, and others. They also are home to diverse types of cold-water and warm-water seaweed. The sea extending in front of Cape Oma has particularly high levels of biodiversity (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). The northern coast of the Shimokita Peninsula is visited by Brent goose.
