These are the waters in the vicinity of the mouth of the Tokachi River and the mouths of the Tokachi lakes and ponds (Chobushi Pond, Lake Yudonuma, Kimonto Pond, Oikamanai Pond, Horokayanto Pond, and others). The coast of the Tokachi lakes and ponds and vicinity are covered in abundant coastal vegetation, and they constitute an important habitat for creatures that come and go between the lakes and ponds and the sea (Spirinchus lanceolatus, icefish, and others) and creatures inhabiting brackish water (Asian clam and others). They also serve as a transit point for numerous migratory birds. This zone constitutes a very important shore because of the way the connection between sandy beaches, sand dunes, and lagoons is preserved here in its natural state. It also is a pacific herring spawning grounds, and Hucho perryi have been recorded here. In addition, numerousBrachyramphus marmoratus and other rare species have been recorded here. It also is visited by sand martin, slaty-backed gull, little-ringed plover, kentish plover, and others (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
