Summary of Workshop 2009 of the Asian Network for Prevention of Illegal Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes

Workshop 2009 of the Asian Network for Prevention of Illegal Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during January 20-22, 2009. The workshop was organized by Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Basel Convention Regional Centre for South-East Asia, supported by Department of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Malaysia. The workshop was attended by 11 countries and a special administrative region in Asia.

Each country presented the latest regulations and enforcement activities related to the Basel Convention. The participants discussed good practices for effective implementation of the Convention and the environmentally sound management for those wastes, including E-waste. The participants agreed to develop an e-handbook compiling good practices and to send notification documents promptly through fax or emails as well as by post. The participants also agreed to continue information exchange and encourage regional cooperation among the member countries.
