Results of Environmental Monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs) in FY 2006

Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOE) has been conducting successive investigation on the Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs) such as PCBs, HCB, DDTs since FY2003 to contribute to the effective evaluations of the Stockholm Convention.
The following is summaries of FY2006 survey.
[1] The persistence of the POPs showed leveling off or a mild decreasing tendency.
[2] It is considered a transient tendency, however, some sites showed a high level relatively.
[3] Although Japan has never produced or imported Mirex and Toxaphenes, Mirex were detected in all the samples of wildlife and atomospheric air, as well as in samples of surface water and bottom sediment, and Toxaphenes were detected in samples of wildlife. Therefore it is necessary to continue the monitoring to trace their fate from the standpoint of global pollution monitoring.

The detection results of the FY2006 survey is shown in Table 1 and Table 2. (To avoid duplication, PCDDs/PCDFs that have been monitored by other divisions of MOE are not included in this results.)
