International Conference for Implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement hosted by the Ministry of the Environment,Japan (MOEJ)

At COP26 held in Glasgow, the UK, in November 2021, the implementation guidelines for Article 6 of the Paris Agreement (market mechanism) were successfully agreed. The focus has now shifted to the implementation of the market mechanism under Article 6. In this regard, the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) will host an international conference on February 17, 2022 (Part 1) and March 7, 2022 (Part 2), to promote understanding and capacity building for the implementation of the market mechanism, with the support of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat, the UK COP26 presidency, the incoming COP27 presidency and other stakeholders.

1. Objectives

This conference is co-hosted by MOEJ and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), with the aim of advancing specific discussion on capacity building together with other governments and related organizations for the implementation of the market mechanisms under Article 6. With the agreement on the Article 6 rulebook at COP26, progress on global emission reductions utilizing market mechanisms is highly anticipated. As a frontrunner of market mechanism implementation, through operation of the JCM, MOEJ will host this international conference to promote understanding and to build capacity for the implementation of the market mechanism.
