International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) General Meeting Held

The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) General Meeting (GM) took place on October 22-23 in Cozumel, Mexico. Representatives of 59 parties, including 21 coral reef countries, 25 international organizations, and NGOs and universities, participated in the meeting. The meeting included discussions on holding the next GM between April 22 and 24, 2007 in Tokyo, and this date and venue was adopted. Also adopted was the designation of the year 2008 as the International Year of the Coral Reef (IYOR), aiming to foster better understanding among peoples in the countries participating in ICRI and greater awareness of the precious coral reef ecosystems.
