ECO ASIA 2006 - Actions toward Sustainable Societies by Individual, Local and Regional Level

The Ministry of the Environment held the 14th Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO ASIA 2006) on June 24th and 25th in Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture with representatives from 22 countries and 11 international organizations including 7 Ministers. All the participants were wearing COOL BIZ attires during the sessions and related events.

The congress was chaired by Minister Koike and the participants discussed on its main theme of the congress "Towards Sustainable Societies." The discussions focused on (i) vitalizing actions by citizens, (ii) invigorating actions by communities and local governments, and (iii) promoting collaboration among countries in Asia and the Pacific towards establishing sustainable societies. The points of the discussions were worked up into Chair's Summary.

In the opening plenary session, a video clip of "COOL ASIA 2006," a fashion show held at Omotesando Hills on May 31st, was put on a screen. Also the prize giving ceremony of the ECO ASIA Foreign Students' Essay Contest on the theme of "Mitigate global warming - means and measures in my home country" was conducted during the session.
