Abstract

Towards decarbonization worldwide, it is crucial to reduce emissions in Asia while ensuring compatibility with anticipated economic growth. Taking into account unevenly distribution of renewable energy sources such as solar/wind power, as well as differences in industrial structures among countries, pursuing initiatives tailored to each country's circumstances is important.
Respecting various pathways towards net-zero, Japan with 10 partner countries launched the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), with both public and private sectors, to contribute to decarbonization of the region. Since 2023, through high-level meetings of leaders and ministers, discussions on policy coordination for decarbonization progressed in energy, industry, and transportation sectors. Furthermore, Japanese companies already generated over 400 specific cooperation projects to support Asia's decarbonization efforts.
In this seminar, we will introduce progress of AZEC and discuss the global challenge to reconcile decarbonization with economic growth. Involving government officials, private enterprises and research institutions, we will explore strategies to further promote effective initiatives.
