Signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the Republic of India in the Field of Environmental Cooperation

   August 28, 2025, on the occasion of the visit to Japan by H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister the Republic of India, ASAO Keiichiro, Minister of the Environment of Japan and H.E. Mr. Sibi George, Ambassador of the Republic of India to Japan, signed  the “Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in the Field of Environmental Cooperation” for its renewal, the original of which was signed in October 2018.
   Signing on the MoC symbolizes the two countries’ commitment to further strengthen cooperation in the field of environment.

   The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the Republic of India signed the “Memorandum of Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Cooperation” in October 2018, and have been cooperating in various areas including climate change and circular economy. On the occasion of the visit to Japan by H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister the Republic of India, ASAO Keiichiro, Minister of the Environment of Japan and H.E. Mr. Sibi George, Ambassador of the Republic of India to Japan, signed the MoC for its renewal.
 
Areas of cooperation under the renewed MoC are as listed below:
 
1. Pollution control (air, soil and water);
2. Chemical treatment;
3. Waste management including integrated solid waste management through environmentally sustainable cities, and hazardous substance management;
4. Coastal and marine eco-system;
5. Environmental technologies;
6. Climate change excluding issues related to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement such as Carbon Markets;
7. Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity consistent with objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity including OECMs (Other Effective area based Conservation Measures);
8. Wastewater management; and
9. Other areas related to environmental protection as mutually decided upon.
 
Two Ministries will further strengthen environmental cooperation.
