Signing of Mutual Recognition Arrangement between Japan and Indonesia regarding the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)
On October 28, 2024, the "MUTUAL RECOGNITION ARRANGEMENT BETWEEN THE MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT OF JAPAN AND THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTRY OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA ON THE JOINT CREDITING MECHANISM BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA AND THE INDONESIAN GREENHOUSE GASES EMISSION REDUCTION CERTIFICATION" was signed by ASAO Keiichiro, Minister of the Environment of Japan, and Dr. Siti Nurbaya, former Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia.
1. Since the establishment of the JCM between Japan and Indonesia in 2013, 51 projects have been implemented, promoting the dissemination of advanced decarbonization technologies and infrastructure, among others, and contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions or removals and sustainable development in Indonesia.
2. This Arrangement confirms that the JCM between Japan and Indonesia is an appropriate and sufficient scheme equivalent to the Indonesian GHGs emission reduction certification (SPEI) based on the Regulation of the Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry.
3. In response to the signing, on November 12, 2024, a special event on this Arrangement was held at the Indonesian Pavilion at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), attended by MATSUZAWA Yutaka, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, Ministry of the Environment of Japan, Mr. Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia Presidential Envoy on Climate Change, Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurrofiq, Minister of Environment of Indonesia, and Dr. Raja Juli Antoni, Minister of Forestry of Indonesia among others.
4. In addition, a side event on this Arrangement was co-organized by the Ministry of Environment of Indonesia.
