Establishment of Technical Support Unit for IPBES Task Force on Scenarios and Models of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

<Simultaneous announcement by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies>

1.On March 1, 2024, the Technical Support Unit (TSU) for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Task Force on Scenarios and Models of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services was established. The TSU will be hosted by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan. The Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, had submitted its proposal to host the TSU in Japan at IGES in response to the call for offers to host the TSU issued by the IPBES Secretariat.

2.The IPBES Task Force on Scenarios and Models of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services is a group of experts established to provide advice and support on scenarios and modelling for various IPBES assessment processes, and the implementation of programmes on scenarios and models related to biodiversity and ecosystem services. The task force is also expected to provide the scientific information needed to assess progress made in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

3.IGES has hosted the IPBES TSUs for the Regional Assessment for Asia and the Pacific as well as for the Assessment of Invasive Alien Species and their Control, and has provided support to develop the assessment reports. Based on these experiences, IGES is expected to continue to contribute to the work of IPBES as a part of the IPBES secretariat in the Asia-Pacific region.

4.MOE Japan will continue contributing to the work of IPBES, including by providing support for the organization of necessary meetings to ensure swift operationalization of the task force.
