25th Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA25), 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties Serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and 4th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties Serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-Sharing (Part 2)

1. The 25th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 25) will be held in Nairobi, Kenya (United Nations Office at Nairobi), from October 15 to 19, 2023.

2. The 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 15), the 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties Serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CP-COP-MOP10), and the 4th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties Serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-Sharing (NP-COP-MOP4) (Part 2) will be held on October 19 and 20, 2023, and the discussion on the issues remaining from COP 15 Part 2 held in December 2022 and the adoption of a resolution will take place.

3. The Ministry of the Environment, Japan, will hold side events relating to invasive alien species during the period of the SBSTTA25 meeting.

■ Side events

Major side events hosted and co-hosted by the Government of Japan during the period of SBSTTA25 are as follows.
 
● Enhancing international cooperation towards minimizing the negative impacts caused by invasive alien species
(1) Date: October 15, 2023, from 13:15
(2) Venue: Conference room in the building of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (CR-11-JUSCANZ)
(3) Hosted by: Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) of the United Kingdom, The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
(4) Outline: Following the inclusion of a target relating to invasive alien species(Target 6) in the new biodiversity framework and the approval of the Summary for Policymakers of the IPBES Invasive Alien Species Assessment Report in September 2023, this event will be held to introduce the recent international trends on invasive alien species, share experience toward achieving the global targets, and discuss actions necessary for strengthening international cooperation and promoting the participation of diverse stakeholders. It will be held as part of the initiative led by Japan, as the G7 presidency, in consideration of the recent international trends related to invasive alien species.

● Leveraging landscape approaches for ecosystem restoration: Practical experiences to inform the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
(1) Date: October 16, 2023, from 13:15
(2) Venue: Conference room in the building of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (CR-8-CEE)
(3) Hosted by: United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), Ministry of the Environment (MOE), Japan
(4) Outline: Under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), this event will be held to share experiences from various parts of the world, focusing on how the comprehensive landscape approach, which is practiced in the Satoyama initiative in Japan, contributes to ecosystem restoration, and to hold a panel discussion on how the approach can accelerate ecosystem restoration and help with the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
