Results of the 59th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

The 59th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was held from July 25 to 29 in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and the IPCC elected its new Bureau and other members, which will lead the process to complete its Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).
 
Jim Skea of the United Kingdom was elected as Chair of the IPCC, and ENOKI Takeshi from Japan was appointed as Co-Chair of the Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI).

Overview

The 59th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was held from July 25 to 29 in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. During the Session, the IPCC elected the new IPCC Bureau comprising 34 members, and the 12 members of the Bureau of the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFB), which will lead the process to complete its Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).

    Approx. 600 representatives from governments of each country, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat, and other international organizations. From Japan, three representatives from Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Main agenda: Election of Bureau Members

In this Session, the IPCC elected the new IPCC Bureau, comprising 34 members, which will lead the process to complete AR7. The newly-elected members of the IPCC Bureau are: IPCC Chair Jim Skea (United Kingdom); IPCC Vice-Chairs Diana Ürge-Vorsatz (Hungary), Ladislaus Chang’a (United Republic of Tanzania), and Ramón Pichs-Madruga (Cuba). From Japan, ENOKI Takeshi, Fellow/TSU scientific advisor of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), was elected as Co-Chair of the TFI. Moreover, the Co-Chairs of three Working Groups and other Co-Chairs of TFI were elected in this Session as shown below:

Working Group III (Mitigation of Climate Change) Co-Chairs: Katherine Calvin (United States of America), Joy Jacqueline Pereira (Malaysia)
TFI Co-Chairs: ENOKI Takeshi (Japan), Mazhar Hayat (Pakistan)
 
For three Working Groups, Vice-Chairs were also elected from the following countries:
Working Group I: seven Vice-Chairs (Ghana, Senegal, Nepal, Argentina, Canada, Indonesia, and Switzerland)
Working Group II: eight Vice-Chairs (Bahamas, Gambia, Kenya, India, Chile, Venezuela, Latvia, and Australia)
Working Group III: seven Vice-Chairs (Norway, Turkey, Germany, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and Republic of the Congo)
 
In addition to IPCC Bureau members, 12 TFB members (Chad, Egypt, Maldives, Mexico, United States of America, Italy, Iran, Chile, Argentina, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Spain) were also elected. TFB consists of two TFI Co-Chairs and 12 members.

Future schedule

The 60th Session will be held in Turkey (the time has not been decided), in which the future of IPCC will be discussed.
